Six IT Decisions Your IT People Shouldnʼt Make

I tend to agree with the author of this piece as it outlines some of the issues faced by companies when senior managers ignore their IT related responsibilities and instead leave these IT related decisions solely to the company’s IT executives. Whilst the upper level IT staff may be the right choice when it comes to making decisions about the implementation of the actual technology, what to use, how it will be deployed and what software packages are most appropriate. When it comes down to business related decisions these decisions should be left with senior managers who have an understanding of how the business is operated and how decisions will ultimately affect a company and its bottom line. As outlined by the author there are 6 main decisions that should be left to senior managers. 3 of these decisions relate to strategy and 3 relate to Execution. All of these decisions, whilst IT related are actually business decisions that have an effect on the bottom line and should be made with the input of someone who has a good understanding of how the business runs. Towards the end of the piece the author also notes that whilst IT related business decisions should be left to senior managers they shouldn't be handled alone and that IT executives should be allowed some input when it comes to decision making. I believe that this concept of spreading IT related decision making amongst multiple parties rather than leaving it to one group or individual is a good idea and would go a long way to preventing IT related disasters within businesses.
